Please meet Fuscia, OOAK 30" cloth over wire armature work of art specially created for the Treasures of the Gypsy challenge at the 2006 Houston Quilt Exhibition, and published in Art Doll Quarterly Magazine, Spring 2007.
This is my first time participating in this event, and I wish I could have been there in person!
I used an original design to create this doll.
She stands 22" high, and is an extravaganza of artistic embellishment and fabric sculpture.
Fuscia is adorned with authentic textiles, jewelry, colors and embellishments worn and admired by exotic Middle Eastern dancers and doll artists ^*^
The fabric of the gloves and garment top is essentially a swatch supplied by the sponsor of the event, Pamela Armas. I took a couple of days to study it and decide how to use it.
One day I looked in my closet and uncovered a favorite fuscia scarf with slivers of silver encased inside, and gold trim. I love that scarf. I got it in Jerusalem. It wasn't easy to part with, but I knew this was to become the theme of the doll. It worked perfectly with the challenge fabrics, and Fuscia literally evolved thereafter almost on her own.
Fuscia's stunning necklace and head piece are made from personal jewelry- a stunning neclace with gorgeous jewels and Swarovsky crystals. It hangs on a gold chain. Somehow the necklace broke, and I am unable to wear it. I was heartbroken, but now I'm happy to display the necklace this way. It's the next best thing, and I can still enjoy it!
The eyes are made from polymer clay. They are essentially beads that I molded, baked, and painted, and then set inside the cloth head. I enjoy making eyes this way. She wears "real" false eyelashes from Europe. I got the eyelashes several months ago when I asked my husband to get a cheap pair from the store on the way home from work. "Sure," he said, and presented me with exotic lashes that cost almost $20! I could not believe it, and he was bewildered himself. He had gotten them from the most expensive make - up store in the mall !!! So much for cheap doll lashes! I really didn't know what to do with them, but they worked perfectly for Fuscia.
I guess they were just meant to be....

When Fuscia moves her hips, you can hear the coins and bells clinging musically on her traditional dance scarf.
